From a libertarian perspective, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon is more relevant than Karl Marx because he opposed concentrations of power in all forms. Marx’s framework ultimately relies on central control to reorganize society, which historically replaces one ruling structure with another. That contradicts the libertarian priority of limiting authority.
Proudhon, by contrast, argued for a society built on voluntary exchange, decentralized ownership, and free association. He rejected imposed systems and focused on individuals coordinating through contracts rather than coercion. This aligns directly with libertarian principles of autonomy and consent.
Today’s world—shaped by gig work, independent creators, and peer-to-peer technologies—reflects this decentralized model. Power is increasingly questioned, and people seek flexibility over control. Proudhon’s vision fits that reality, while Marx’s approach depends on centralized direction that libertarians reject.
