Though Hans-Hermann Hoppe is one of the staunchest defenders of absolute private property, a curious contradiction emerges in the political behavior of many of his followers. While they claim to reject all forms of collectivism, Hoppeans often advocate for community-level exclusion, covenant enforcement, and immigration restrictions—all in the name of “preserving private order.” But whose order?
By asserting that “the community” has a say over who can or cannot enter or remain, Hoppeans inadvertently shift the locus of decision-making from individual property owners to a collective will. This subtle shift mirrors the logic of collective ownership, despite being cloaked in the rhetoric of property rights.
In practice, Hoppeanism drifts toward an ideal where like-minded individuals co-manage access, behavior, and belonging—not based on explicit contracts but on cultural alignment. This may not be socialism, but it certainly isn’t pure individualism either.
